Why is there no subtitles in kill bill

Watched Kill Bill last night on Netflix and had the subs off as normal, so just basic audio. I know previously when watching a film in English and subs off, the foreign audio was subbed.

Now last night I had to turn on subs to see what the Japanese were saying. Is there a setting somewhere I missed? The Kill Bill films were a heady, revenge-cocktail of Japanese martial arts films, spaghetti westerns and Italian horror, and Death Proof was a nod to the grindhouse theatres that exhibited action, horror and exploitation B movies. Lo and behold, I turn the subtitles on and now I get the whole converstaion. Does this happen on everyones player or is mine just acting weird with this disk? If you actually are required to turn subtitles on to get all the dialogue, that is complete bullshit that it isn't made clear anywhere on the packaging or even before the movie starts.
