Methods of Assessing Reading Comprehension One method is to use a formal assessment, like the example above, with reading passages followed by questions about the passage. Another method is to use informal assessments. Ask students to tell you about what they read or retell the story or event in their own words.

What is a miscue in reading? They are miscue analysis and running record. A miscue is an unexpected response to a reading cue; saying something different than what is in the passage. A miscue analysis is the recording and review of miscues in order to determine a pattern of reading strategy. How do you evaluate a child's reading level? Ask the school for your child's reading level.

Look for books that match that level. Many kids' books list their reading level on the back or spine. Do a five-fingers vocabulary check. Do a quick comprehension check. What is fluency in reading? Fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. In order to understand what they read, children must be able to read fluently whether they are reading aloud or silently.

When reading aloud, fluent readers read in phrases and add intonation appropriately. How many species of New World monkeys are there?
