In eight seasons guiding the Tigers, he compiled a record while the team won the Central Division three straight years and made a second World Series appearance in , when they were swept by the Giants. After serving as third base coach for the White Sox from , he managed the Pirates from , reaching the NLCS three consecutive seasons. Leyland retired after the season and became a special advisor to the Tigers front office. Leyland, 75, has been married 32 years to his wife, Katie.

They live in Pittsburgh and have two children, Patrick and Kellie. They started giving me a little responsibility as early as in the New York-Penn league. We traveled by station wagons and sometimes I drove. I was a backup catcher and did not play that much. I became a student of the game and that helped me a lot. He had some restrictions when we traveled out of state and the Tigers had to get permission. He was special and I knew he could make it.

We had a bunch of guys from that Clinton team that made it to the big leagues, like Mark Wagner, Phil Mankowski, Billy Baldwin and a few others. He had all kinds of skill. Talk about an excellent operation. I had never been to Detroit for a game despite being a lifelong fan. So I needed gear. Specifically I wanted a Datsyuk jersey. Color me shocked when we arrived and were greeted by the nicest lady!

They even got the jersey down and stitched while I finished picking out what I wanted. Will be ordering some more soon! They made us feel welcome and gave us a lot of pointer on food and traffic -again the nicest people and top tier product that is priced extremely fairly! Very disappointed. I live in Phoenix so I had to order a Detroit bad Boys t shirt, however the basketball was not orange or even close to it, which makes the whole shirt pop.

In fact you could barely even tell it was a basketball, it just blended in with the color of the shirt. The picture shows that it is orange. I am astounded at how awesome these guys were.
