Although Justin is not the only smart character on the show, he is definitely the brightest. When Alex duplicates herself to meet Harper at the Crazy Ten-Minute Sale, she makes it Max's responsibility to keep an eye on her duplicate and make sure Jerry doesn't realize what has occurred.
However, when Max can't keep up the ruse, Jerry realizes what has happened and leaves to get Alex. All the while, Justin had sat back and watched Max attempt to cover for their sister.
Although the Russo siblings all end up covering for each other at different points in the series, Justin becomes the main person Alex gets to cover for her or help her when things go wrong. From the beginning of the series, the Russo family owned and worked at the Waverly Substation. The sandwich shop mainly employed the family, and the vegetable cooler also secretly held the family's wizard lair. It was a running joke throughout the series that the sandwich shop was not very successful nor was it known for the highest quality food.
The Waverly Substation is one of the most critical locations in the entire series, and part of the series finale included Alex, Justin, and Max joining forces to make sure their father doesn't close it. In the pilot, Harper wears rainbow socks and a sunflower shirt. Although that may be out of the ordinary in the realm of the series, it is relatively tame in comparison to what Harper wears later.
Harper was known for designing and putting together her own clothes. Harper's fashion sense was always different from everyone else's, but Harper's outfits don't come alive until after the pilot. In later episodes and seasons, Harper's outfits genuinely take on a life of their own, and one of the most comedic parts of the series involved Harper's clothes.
Alex may be the most known to cause mayhem and mischief, but Justin and Max certainly had their share of trouble too. When Jerry confronts all three siblings, he must face not only Alex's choice but Max having broken Jerry's old wand in half and Justin breaking Jerry's drill. Over time the kids still find ways to cause trouble. The series premiere shows that while Alex can be sneaky, she is also bullied at school by Gigi. Alex and Gigi had been enemies since kindergarten, and the two make several references to Gigi beating Alex in most of their interactions.
However, when Theresa insists that Alex post signs for a lost dog, the kids' are shocked when someone comes and claims it. When their magical dragon accidentally winds up in a local dog show the kids must find a way to get it back without revealing the family secret. When Alex attempts to hang out with Justin's older group of friends to see an R-rated movie, Justin tells her that she can't go in and should wait with him in the arcade area until the movie is over.
Ignoring her brother's advice, Alex transports herself into the theatre and winds up on the big screen in the movie! Justin uses magic to join his sister to fight off the scary villain. When Alex performs a spell in an attempt to vanish Justin's new zit she instead brings it to life and Justin is stuck with it just before attending the school dance.
At first the zit proves to be helpful by serving in a Cyrano capacity as Justin tries to impress his date Miranda but when it begins to insult people, Alex arrives in time to turn it back into a plain old zit on Justin's forehead.
When Alex uses an emotion potion to get a boy to like her, she accidentally takes the entire dose herself which results in her falling in love with herself. Justin tries to prevent her from bragging about her perfection in order to stop her head from growing too big, literally. Meanwhile, Max wakes up and discovers his powers.
Frustrated with the constant comparison to her big brother, Alex uses a magical genie to wish that Justin would be forgotten. But when the genie goes too far and makes Justin completely disappear, Alex must figure out a way to get him back. Justin and Alex go to Wizard's School where Justin quickly rises in the ranks of popularity due to his disciplined wizardry and Alex is looked upon as a bit of an outcast due to her nonchalant approach to magic. Max convinces Jerry to have a long overdue sleep over on their terrace where the two rough it until Theresa coaxes them inside.
When Alex gets wind of an evil professor's plan to rob Justin of his wizard powers during the annual pongitch tournament, she puts her magic to good use to expose him and spare her brother from harm. Max goes head to head with a local merchant who's trying to dissuade business by dressing up as a sandwich to promote the shop.
In an attempt to impress a girl, Justin uses a spell to magically move objects and becomes the star pitcher on his baseball team. Alex learns this and uses it as an opportunity to claim to be the catcher's good luck charm. When Dad realizes the truth and forces Justin to learn his lesson by getting clobbered with his mortal pitching, Alex uses magic to make the ball harder to hit.
When Jerry's fun-loving wizard brother pays a visit, Alex vies to have him become her wizard trainer in lieu of her by the book dad. But after one too many magical mishaps, Alex learns to appreciate her dad's wizardry expertise and ultimately, the kids discover that their father actually gave up his powers in order to marry their non-magical mother.
After failing to successfully hide her Wizard report card from her parents, Alex panics and accidentally turns them into guinea pigs. When Justin and Max inadvertently let them loose, the three must team up to find their parents and return them to their human form. Amid the chaos, Professor Crumbs of Wiz Tech debates on whether or not to permanently remove Alex's powers.
Alex takes on an internship with a top Fashion Magazine and decides to put on an outrageous fashion show featuring Harper's bizarre wear to teach her boss a lesson for taking credit for her ideas.
Jerry and Theresa hire a new girl, Millie, at the Sub Station that Justin immediately falls in crush with so Max tries to help. In an attempt to make Riley jealous, Alex uses a spell to bring a mannequin to life and must enlist Justin's help after it falls in love with her and can not be transformed back. It's a magical "Freaky Friday" when Alex switches places with her mother to allow her to experience the thrills of the Quinceanera that she never had.
When Alex decides to take a short cut on her Art History assignment, she brings historical masterpieces to life in order to answer the questions on her worksheet correctly. When Alex winds up on Harper's team for the annual 'Quiz Bowl' she uses wizard 'smarty pants' to help the team to victory.
But her plan backfires when she outshines Harper who ultimately quits her own team. Alex is wary when Justin meets and falls for a girl named Isabella! Her suspicions prove to be right when Isabella turns out to be a werewolf and she turns Justin into one as a result. When Justin and Max get a hold of Alex's secret journal and take it to school it is confiscated by none other than Alex's arch nemesis Gigi.
In a panic, the boys do a spell that accidentally places Gigi in the book. Alex has a crush on a "gear head" type guy named Dean and plots to gain his interest by asking Jerry if he can fix up his old junky car. Dean not only fixes the car but enters it in an upcoming race. Jerry is disappointed when he discovers that the kids have failed to work together on their "group magic project". So, he devises a plan that leads Max to solve a crime as his own superhero, "Maximan" which forces Alex and Justin to help!
When Wiz Tech is temporarily closed students and faculty are housed with families in the real world. Alex is dumped by Ronald after enrolling in Wiz Tech to spend more time with him. She later teams up with Hugh Normous to expose Ronald's dad and Trumpet Industries of orchestrating a shady deal as the new corporate sponsor of Wiz Tech.
Alex tries to avoid running into Harper at the annual comic book convention in order to protect her wizard secret but winds up revealing the truth after Harper takes a spin in Alex's power-laden Battle Diva costume.
When the cab that Alex was born in, Cab number is retired, she charms it back to life in order to continue to cherish its memories. Jerry and Theresa's anniversary plans are ruined over a fight about magic which prompts Alex to summon Cupid. Stuffleby, a wizard guidance counsellor, informs the kids that they must have a viable profession to fall back on in the event that they don't become wizards.
In the school's production of Peter Pan, Alex is hired to understudy Harper who is playing Tinkerbell. When Harper suffers an injury, Alex has to play the part but opts to hire a fairy from the fairy world instead. It's Fashion Week in NYC and Harper has landed a job with a designer known for presenting a one of a kind at his show.
When Harper brings the one of a kind dress to Alex for safe keeping but it accidentally gets ruined when Alex tries it on. Darling is Harper from the future! When Alex takes the time to help out an elderly friend on her own, it causes her to constantly be tardy to school. Laritate decides to teach her a lesson by placing her in the Sunshine Club to get credit for helping others. Hugh runs away from home and lands at the Russo's after discovering that not only is he not a giant, but he is also adopted.
When the Russo kids select mentors at Tribeca Prep's annual career day Justin picks the local weatherman, Max picks a singing cop and when she's caught trying to sneak out - Alex abruptly picks Mr.
Alex swaps brains with Harper in order to pass an exam but then her magic fails her and they are unable to swap back. And, it causes chaos during the Russo Family Game Night when a girl who's smitten with Justin won't back down. When Justin and Harper bond over their mutual love for Silent Movies, Alex begins to tease them and proclaims that the two are now 'dating'.
When Max gets a wizard tutor, Alex and Justin fight over spending time with her. When they discover that she will depart after Max passes his wizard test, they sabotage his study efforts. Alex is selected to paint the school's new wall mural but becomes frustrated when she is asked to incorporate the committee's ideas instead of sticking to her own. When Justin gives Jerry a magical pencil holder that always keeps pencils sharp for his birthday, Alex tops him by giving Jerry magic for a day.
Tipton, he arrives and is immediately smitten with London. Meanwhile, Alex has snuck Harper on board to take her make-up science class, and Max turns everything into a competition with Zack.
