ERAS is a program offered by the Association of American Medical Colleges and provides applicants with a user-friendly interface to create and submit application material. This easy-to-use software also allows programs to manage the entire application process, from filing material to scheduling and ranking applicants.

Its tools are customizable to help you quickly locate applicants with the characteristics your program is looking for in order to recruit the best applicants for your program. To date, nearly 30 residency specialties and 18 subspecialties participate in ERAS.

This means most if not all potential candidates for your program are already familiar with the ERAS process through their residency application experience. In fact, applicants have expressed overwhelming support for a universal, electronic web-based application over traditional paper application processes. This service is free for participating programs; it is maintained by fees from applicants.

The Match Quota Deadline — the deadline on which programs must submit the final number of positions offered in each track to be matched. Match Day! For programs not participating in ERAS, applicants will be required to mail their application and accompanying documentation.

Applicants must also be aware of the application deadline for these programs. Some programs may use the Universal Application in addition to, or in lieu of, an individual institutional application. During your third year, you typically spend two to four months on the advanced endoscopy service, where you continue to build your skills in endoscopic ultrasound EUS , endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography ERCP , and other advanced endoscopic techniques.

During this final year of training, you also have a greater opportunity to focus on individualized training to facilitate your transition to an academic or practice career. Research and scholarly activities are essential for a successful career in gastroenterology, even if your ultimate goal is clinical care.

This is because a solid understanding of research methodologies helps a physician better understand and evaluate the validity of the medical literature.

To that end, each of our fellows completes a research project and a quality improvement project as part of training. Early in your fellowship, you are matched with a faculty member who shares similar interests and mentors you throughout your projects. During your first year, you conduct literature reviews and generate study questions and hypotheses.

During your second and third fellowship years, you execute your projects and then prepare and submit abstracts and complete the manuscripts. Our division offers a wide variety of research opportunities covering aspects of gastroenterology and hepatology from the clinical to basic sciences.
